CURE International India Trust and Mahadevappa Rampure Medical College have taken up a campaign to provide free treatment for children with clubfoot. Treatment is provided at the Basaveshwar Teaching and General Hospital every Monday. Medical Director of Cure Clubfoot Karnataka M.S. Rudraprasad told presspersons here on Wednesday that clubfoot could be easily detected and cured with timely intervention. If children were not provided treatment, it would result in permanent disability.
In 2012, as many as 80 children were provided treatment. Dr. Rudraprasad said that the Ponseti method of treatment provided complete cure with little expenditure.
He said that the Ponseti method was accepted by the World Health Organisation (WHO),the American Academy of Paediatrics and American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons as the standard for clubfoot treatment. Dr. Rudraprasad said that over 50,000 children were born with clubfoot in India each year and 2,500 children were born with clubfoot in Karnataka each year. Around 10,000 children had been provided treatment by Cure International India so far, he said.
State coordinator of Cure Clubfoot Gopi Busanatham said that CURE International had clinics in Bangalore, Bellary, Hubli, Gulbarga and Belgaum districts. The trust proposed to establish centres in Mysore, Shimoga and Hassan districts.
