Four women travelling in a car were killed when a lorry rammed their vehicle near Chickaballapur Bypass on National Highway 7 on Tuesday evening.

The dead were identified as Venkatalakshmamma (30) from Nandigrama, Parvathamma (45), Pramilamma (55) and Rathnamma (45), all from Doddamarali village in Chickaballapur.

Driver of the car Chennabyre Gowda (60) escaped with minor injuries, said Chickaballapur traffic police.

The police said that the women had gone to a fair in a nearby village.

They were returning home via the Manchinabele Underpass when the accident took place.

The lorry was bound for Bagepalli from Bangalore.

The police said that the lorry was carrying sheets of plywood.

Due to the impact of the crash, some plywood sheets fell onto the car.

The lorry driver and cleaner escaped unharmed, the police said.

The police suspected that the lorry driver could have lost control of the vehicle and hit the car.

The Chickballapur traffic police have registered a case against the lorry driver, Yadayya, who is said to be absconding. Further investigation is on.
