Four more farmers committed suicide in the State on Sunday owing to mounting debts. Of them, two were from Mandya district and two from Tumakuru district.
In Mandya
Sericulture farmer Umesh (32) ended his life by hanging from a tree at Karlakatti village in Malavalli taluk and sugarcane grower Devaraju (26) died after consuming poison at Chikkabyadarahalli in Pandavapura taluk, the police said.
According to the farmers’ relatives, they were disturbed owing to debts.
The jurisdictional police said they would investigate and ascertain the reasons for their deaths. Two cases of unnatural death have been registered.
In Tumakuru
Nagaraj (55) of Lakkanahalli in Sira taluk and Srinivas (42) of Chikkahonavalli in Tiptur taluk committed suicide by hanging.
The police said that Nagaraj owned 2.5 acres of land and had taken Rs. 3 lakh loan from VSSN (Vyavasaya Seva Sahakara Niyamitha) and self-help groups. But he was unable to repay the loan as his borewell had dried up. The police said that Srinivas had taken loan of Rs. 2 lakh loan from the Primary Land Development bank and a co-operative society.
