Following a tip-off, members of the District Child Protection Unit rescued four children who were allegedly being employed at a construction site by the husband of a municipal councillor here on Saturday.
While two boys are Class 7students, one is a Class 3 student and another, a Class 5 student.
The members had visited the construction site along with members of Sneha Education Foundation and they found the children allegedly employed for digging a pit and filling it with stones for a foundation.
The work was taken up in the plot belonging to Laxman Arakeri, husband of Honnavva Laxman Arakeri, BJP councillor for ward 62.
Subsequently, the children were brought to Old Hubballi Police Station before being handed over to the the unit which then sent them to the unit’s open shelter at Navanagar.
The children were from Laxman Chawl of Sadashivanagar in old Hubballi. Counsellor at the Child Protection Unit Krishna Kulkarni said that a Labour Officer had told them that she would initiate appropriate action after verifying the details.
