The activists of the Nava Karnataka Niramana Vedike staged a protest in the city on Tuesday demanding that the government take necessary action to clear the encroachment of the Hosakere tank in Veerannana Benavalli village. Addressing the protest meet, Manjunath, district president of the Vedike said that according to records available with the Department of Revenue, Hosakere tank is spread across an area of 14 acres.

The water in the tank was used by the residents of the village for drinking and agricultural purpose.

It is unfortunate that a few influential persons have encroached more than 10 acres of the tank, he said, adding that after the encroachment, the groundwater level in the village has also declined and borewells in many agriculture lands in the vicinity have gone dry.

He pressed the government to take measures to clear the encroachment at the earliest.

The government should also provide necessary funds to dredge the tank and strengthen its bunds, he added.
