“I am fortunate to be alive…” said Gulbarga Central Prison Superintendent Krishnakumar as he was being led to the ambulance for being taken to the Government General Hospital here.

Mr. Krishnakumar, who appeared shaken by the attack on him by three convicts on Saturday, told presspersons outside the main gate of the prison that he was taken by surprise when the convicts started raining stones on him and came close to him showering abuses.

“I was surprised by the ferocity of the attack….I was on the usual morning rounds near the barracks where the convicts are lodged when the trio who were outside started pelting stones at me… Even as I started running for cover, they chased me and began hitting me.”

Mr. Krishnakumar said the convicts threatened to eliminate him even as he was running back to his office. Immediately after the incident, Superintendent of Police Pravin M. Pawar rushed to the prison with additional forces. A case has been registered at the Farhatabad police station.
