The Forest Department staff, on Saturday, captured a tusker that had caused fear among residents of Ballupete and surrounding villages in Sakleshpur taluk.

A person was killed by the elephant on Wednesday, resulting in protests by the villagers demanding an operation to capture elephants roaming in the taluk.

With the help of five tamed elephants, the staff traced the tusker to a forest plantation at Rajendra Pura and succeeded in sedating it. Soon after capturing the elephant, it was shifted to Dubare Elephant Camp near Kushal Nagar in a special truck.

For the past few days, the tusker had been roaming in the estates near Ballupete. It had crossed National Highway 75 on Friday, leaving residents of Ballupete in shock.

C. Jayaram, APPCCF (Wildlife), told presspersons that the department would capture one more elephant in the taluk soon. “The people here have been demanding that all elephants be captured. As of now, we have got permission to capture one more. We have sought permission to capture a few more elephants,” he said.
