Folklore varsity recruitments mired in controversy

The Karnataka Janapada University at Haveri seems to have got mired in a recruitment controversy after a senior professor wrote to the Vice-Chancellor over ‘procedural lapses’ where candidates belonging to the oppressed classes were denied an opportunity to apply during the recruitment process.

Professor M. Chandra Poojary, who is with the Department of Studies in Rural and Tribal Business Management, told The Hindu over phone that he had written to Vice-Chancellor Ambalike Hiriyanna, citing lapses in fixing reservations for the posts. A copy of the letter had been sent to the registrar also, he said.

Mr. Poojary alleged that the university initially fixed the reservation for posts department-wise. Later, it was altered in a manner that denied oppressed classes a fair opportunity to apply.

The Karnataka Janapada University erred in considering candidates who were registered for doctoral research, ignoring the University Grants Commission’s guidelines for the interview.

Despite suggestions from seniors professors like Mr. Poojary himself, the administration did not rectify the process forcing an aspirant to move the court seeking justice, he said. It included the appointment of K. Premakumar, who was on deputation from Kannada University, as professor. During the syndicate meeting, Mr. Poojary had raised objections to, but it was overlooked, he alleges.

He also pointed out that the recruitment process should be quashed as one of the panellists was not qualified for his post.
