“Preparing for civil services is a test of patience. Students must have a focussed approach to emerge successful in the examinations,” Additional Commissioner of Public Instruction Major Siddalingayya Hiremath said here on Friday.
He was speaking at The Hindu IAS Assistance and Guidance Programme, organised in association with Department of Commerce, Karnatak University, and Gurudev IAS Academy at the Senate Hall in Karnatak University.
Making a power point presentation on what to do while preparing for the civil services, Major Hiremath asked students to remember that their chances of selection was one in a lakh. “Every student should remember that each one of them has to compete with 99,999 others to make it to the next level. But once one is able to reach the next level, then it is assured that he or she can clear any examination and be assured of an employment opportunity,” he said.
Elaborating on how to collect reference study material, he offered tips on how preparation should begin from the preliminaries, to the mains and then the final interview. Giving his own example of appearing for various competitive examinations, Major Hiremath told the students to nurture their dream of becoming IAS officers by putting in the required effort.
An alumnus of Karnatak University, Major Hiremath recalled his student days in his speech. He told the students not to get discouraged if they did not have adequate financial resources because one could become an IAS officer through perseverance and a focused approach.
Akhilkumar Halagatti, director, Gurudev IAS Academy, elaborated on employment opportunities in banking and in public services. He said that lack of awareness about opportunities was another reason for low participation of students from Karnataka in various competitive examinations.
A.S. Shiralashetti, HOD, Commerce; R.L. Hidrabad, KUD Finance Officer and Professor of Commerce, were present.
