Following copious rainfall in the Krishna and Bhima catchment areas in Maharashtra, water level in the two rivers has risen and resulted in a flood-like situation in Yadgir district.
Standing crops on 200 acres of land were damaged after the two rivers flooded in the district in the last two days.
Farmers inseevral villages in the river basins like Tumkur, Absihal, Itagi, Rotnadagi Kadarapur, Shivapur, Gonal, Agnihal, Sugur, Shivanur, Jaladadagi, Benakanahalli, Channur (K), Konkal, Sangam, Anur (K), Kouluru, and Gundlur, who were expecting a good yield, are now a worried lot.
“I hoped of getting good returns this year. But my crops have been destroyed owing to the flood. I have no confidence of even getting back half of the money I spent on the crops,” a farmer from Shivapur village further said. Krishna Bhagya Jala Nigama Ltd. officials have been forced to discharge water from the Narayanapur, Kagina, and Bennitora reservoirs to maintain water stability in them. “We have released water at the rate of 16,000 cusecs from Narayanapur dam on Tuesday. The inflow was at the rate of 25,000 cusecs. The present live water storage is at 492. 13 metres as against the full reservoir limit of 492.25 metres,” a senior official told The Hindu over phone. Meanwhile, the Yadgir district administration has warned people against venturing into the rivers for fishing and other activities.
