Sugarcane fields near Manjari village of Chikkodi taluk caught fire on Tuesday.

Standing sugarcane crop in about six acres was destroyed following an accidental fire near Manjari village of Chikkodi taluk on Tuesday. Two tractor trolleys were also burnt in the incident.

Considering an average of about 80 tonnes of sugarcane per acre and the current price of Rs. 2,650 a tonne, the losses is estimated to be more than Rs. 12 lakh. There was no loss of human or animal life.

Short circuit

It is said the fire was caused by a short circuit in the electricity cable lines running through the fields and spread through the sugarcane fields of Rajaram Khadke, Purandhar Upadhyaya, Sukumar Latte and Appanna Lagali.Efforts of the farmers to put off the fire were in vain.

Fire and Emergency Services personnel rushed to the spot to extinguish the fire. Officials of the Hubli Electricity Supply Company and officers from Ankali police station also visited the spot. A definite cause for the fire has yet to be established. A case has been registered and investigation is underway.
