One person was charred to death and fire crackers worth Rs. 10 lakhs were destroyed when a fire cracker manufacturing unit caught fire at Chitradurga here on Tuesday night.

The deceased has been identified as Darshan (24), son of Satyanarayan, the owner of cracker unit.

According to preliminary investigations, the cracker unit caught fire owing to high temperatures and lack of ventilation facility. Though Satyanarayan claims that he had obtained licenses for the cracker unit, the officers concerned informed that the fact would be known only after verification of the documents as there is no possibility of issuing permission for cracker unit in such congested locality.

Fire extinguishers had a tough time in controlling the fire from spreading to nearby shops and after struggling for more than two and half hours they were successful. A case has been registered and further investigations are on.
