Bangalore University Vice-Chancellor (VC) N. Prabhu Dev put an end to the speculation on his future in the university when he submitted his resignation to Governor and Chancellor H.R. Bhardwaj on Saturday.
“I received the official communication appointing me as the [Chairperson] of the Karnataka Health Systems Commission on October 10. Today I met the Governor and submitted a letter indicating my willingness to accept the chairmanship and relinquish the post of Vice-Chancellor of Bangalore University. I await further instructions,” he said in a press release.
Chancellor’s support
The outgoing VC, however, told The Hindu he was “sad that reforms are being attacked in the university”. Hoping that his resignation would be accepted by the Governor, who has been vocal in his support to him, Dr. Prabhu Dev said he expected the process to be smooth. “The Governor has been kind to me and stood by me.”
Asked why he was hanging up his boots barely four months shy of his tenure’s end, he said: “There has been an onslaught in the last eight months ...so many half-truths and white lies. Not much good work could be done like before.” He also expressed anxiety about the survival of reforms such as centralised admission system, BPL scholarships and midday meal scheme.
Dr. Prabhu Dev has already made a wish list of the areas he wants to concentrate on in his new role, including community medicine, organ donation, and drug delivery system. “Health is originally my alma mater [sic]. Like the Right to Education, there should be a right to health,” he said.
