Yaduveer Krishnadatta Chamaraja Wadiyar and Pramoda Devi Wadiyar, wife of late Srikantadatta Narasimharaja Wadiyar, said on Saturday they were saddened by the spate of farmers’ suicides in the State.

They were here on Saturday to participate in a programme organised to recall the contribution of Nalwadi Krishnaraja Wadiyar for the development of the erstwhile Mysore State.

Ms. Pramoda Devi Wadiyar inaugurated the programme at Sri Nalwadi Krishnaraja Wadiyar Kala Mandir. Later, speaking to presspersons, she said that she was deeply distressed by the suicides of farmers.

She suggested the government and other authorities concerned to find a solution to arrest the trend of farmers ending their lives and appealed to the farming community not to resort to extreme steps.

Mr. Yaduveer Krishnadatta Chamaraja Wadiyar said, he would continue the historical private Darbar/Dasara traditions of the Wadiyar dynasty and the legal battle over the acquisition of the palace with the State government.

Earlier, addressing the gathering at Kala Mandir, Ms. Pramoda Devi Wadiyar recalled the contribution of late Nalwadi Krishnaraja Wadiyar to the development of the erstwhile princely State of Mysore. The Wadiyar dynasty gave an effective administration and responded to people’s problems. Nalwadi Krishnaraja Wadiyar formed Mandya district, besides constructing Krishnaraja Sagar (KRS), Shivanasamudra hydro-electric project and others, she said. Mandya district Kananda Sahitya Parishat president Meera Shivalingaiah, writer Narahalli Balasubrahmanya and others spoke.

Additional Deputy Commissioner B.R. Poornima, B. Shivalingaiah and others were present.

The Nalwadi Krishnaraja Wadiyar Samsmarana Samiti, the Adi Chunchangiri Mahasamsthana Mutt, Mandya District Kannada Sahitya Parishad and S.B. Education Trust had jointly organised the programme.
