Farmers took out a procession in Sandur on Saturday to protest against the establishment of a pellet plant near Somlapur by Karnataka Ferro Concentrates Private Ltd.

The company has already acquired 151 acres of land from the Karnataka Industrial Area Development Board to set up the 1.2 million tonne capacity pellet plant.

Farmers from Yeshwant Nagar, Somlapur, Ankammanahal and surrounding villages, mounted on bullock carts, came to Sandur and submitted a memorandum to the Tahsildar. Raising slogans, the farmers pointed out that the Grama Sabha and the Yeshwant Nagar Gram Panchayat had opposed the setting up of the plant, when the company had applied for permission to build a compound wall and to obtain power connection.

They said setting up of the plant would affect environment and harm public health.
