The farmers’ padayatra from Koodalsangama in Bagalkot district to Kanakumbi in Khanapur taluk of Belagavi district to press for early solution to the issue of sharing of Mahadayi river water and Kalasa Banduri Nala project entered Hubballi on Monday.

The farmers were welcomed by representatives of various organisations, including Congress leaders Bangaresh Hiremath, Dr. Mahesh Nalwad, Rajashekhar Menasinakai, Babajan Mudhol and others.

At a public meeting held in Nagashettikoppa in the presence of Sri Basavaraj Devaru of Mansur Mutt and Sri Linganand Swami, the speakers stressed the need for taking the agitation on non-political lines and demanded the resignation of all the MPs from Karnataka to prevail upon the Central government to find early solution to the problem.

State president of Raita Sena Viresh Sobaradmath lambasted Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Chief Minister Siddaramaiah for their failure to address the problems of the farmers.

Later, the farmers, accompanied by folk artistes held a demonstration and public meeting at Kittur Chennamma Circle before proceeding to Dharwad.

Viresh Sobaradmath said that the farmers had set October 21 as the deadline for the State and the Central governments to make their stands clear and take concrete steps towards resolving the issue. “If we don’t see any positive development and concrete steps, then we will intensify the agitation and chalk out further course of action,” he said.

Meanwhile, Navalgund MLA N.H. Konaraddi, who took part in the agitation said that he had already submitted his resignation to Sri Basavalinga Swami of Gavi Mutt, Navalgund and had also made it clear to the farmers that he would be the first person to submit his resignation to the Speaker if the people of his constituency wanted him to do so to exert pressure on the State and Central governments.
