Additional security arrangements have been made around the Krishnaraja Sagar (KRS), near Srirangapatna in the district, in the wake of a series of protests against discharge of Cauvery waters to Tamil Nadu.

The Irrigation Department has been releasing a large quantity of Cauvery waters to Tamil Nadu, as per the Cauvery Water Disputes Tribunal (CWDT) order, for the last few weeks. Subsequently, the level in the KRS dipped to 103.36 ft. on Friday morning against the full reservoir level of 124.8 ft.

According to the Cauvery Neeravari Nigam Ltd. (CNNL), the outflow from KRS was at the rate of 13,141 cusecs at 6.30 a.m. on Thursday, and it increased to 14,016 cusecs at 6.30 a.m. on Friday.

The inflow on Friday morning was at the rate of 6,808 cusecs.

Protest

Following heavy discharge of water, the Karnataka Rajya Raitha Sangha (KRRS) members staged protests on Bengaluru-Mysuru highway at Gejjalagere, Srirangapatna and elsewhere in the district on Friday afternoon.

Threat

They threatened to lay siege to the reservoir against discharge of water to Tamil Nadu.

Subsequently, the Police Department tightened the security around the reservoir, a senior police official told The Hindu.

Additional forces, including two Karnataka State Reserve Police (KSRP) and two District Armed Reserve (DAR) platoons have been deployed to the area for continuous vigilence, he said.
