Shivaraj Tangadagi, Minister of State for Minor Irrigation and district in-charge, has instructed officials concerned to disburse compensation in all eligible cases of farmers committing suicide.
Presiding over the quarterly Karnataka Development Programme meeting to review the progress of work here on Wednesday, Mr. Tangadagi said that the State government had enhanced compensation for farmer suicide to Rs. 5 lakh and had also issued fresh guidelines.
“Expedite the process of disbursing compensation in all eligible cases and complete it before the end of this month, failing which officials concerned would be held responsible,” he said.
Mr. Ramadas, Joint Director of Agriculture, told the meeting that 27 cases of farmer suicides were reported in the district and compensation of Rs. 5 lakh each was given in nine cases , while 16 claims were rejected.
In two cases, report from Forensic Science Laboratory was awaited. He said that he was yet to get new guidelines and on the receipt of them, steps would be initiated to give compensation accordingly.
School buildings
Expressing displeasure over the lethargic attitude of officials of the Education Department in not initiating steps to identify school buildings in dilapidated condition, the Minister instructed Deputy Director of Public Instruction Shyam Sundar to start work immediately and submit a detailed report before the end of this month besides making alternative arrangements to conduct classes.
In view of the severe drought in the district, the Minister instructed the officials concerned to provide employment to the needy and arrange for fodder for cattle.
Mr. Tangadagi instructed Deputy Commissioner M. Kanagavalli to issue show-cause notice to officials of the Public Works Department and Nirmiti Kendra for their failure to complete roadwork before the deadline of December 31, 2015.
Amaresh Kulagi, Zilla Panchayat president, Raghavendra Hitnal, Iqbal Ansari, Doddanagouda Patil, all legislators, R. Ramachandran, Chief Executive Officer, were present.
