He was unable to repay debts

Unable to repay rising debts, a young farmer committed suicide in Benewad village in Hukkeri taluk on Wednesday. Basavaraj Kadappa Nayak (26) hanged himself at home.

His father died three years ago, leaving behind five acres of land and the responsibility of marrying off three of his sisters. He leaves behind his mother, grandmother and the sisters, one of whom is married.

Basavaraj took loans of upto Rs. 5 lakh from Karnataka Grameena Vikas Bank and other local cooperatives. He could have approached private money lenders too, police said. The family spent much of its savings on the marriage of one of his sisters and Basavaraj was forced to take loans that he was unable to repay in time.

He was upset that his crops did not get remunerative prices. He suffered crop losses too, his mother told the Hukkeri police in her complaint. The body was handed over to the family after post-mortem.
