A farmer from Lakkemakthenhalli village in Davangere taluk, who had consumed poison a fortnight ago, breathed his last here on Saturday. The deceased farmer has been identified as Basavarajappa (55).

Two years back, Basavarajappa had taken a loan of Rs. 4 lakh for growing maize on his two-acre land and owing to adverse climatic conditions, did not get the expected yield. Unable to repay his loans, the farmer consumed poison a fortnight ago and was admitted to Davangere government hospital for treatment.

A case has been registered at Davangere Rural police station.

Farmers’ leader Ravikumar, who visited the hospital, blamed the State government for the death of farmers in different parts of the State. Now at least, the government should frame policies to ensure that farmers get suitable price for their crops, he implored.
