In a shocking incident, a farmer attempted suicide by consuming poison in front of the Koppal Deputy Commissioner in her chamber on Thursday.

The farmer was identified as Rudrappa Palled of Gudur village of Kustagi taluk. Enquiries revealed that he and his family had come to give a petition to the Deputy Commissioner against alleged harassment by a moneylender who sought repayment of Rs. 1.40 lakh loan.

“As usual, the public were allowed to come to give their petitions in the afternoon. The farmer, along with two women and children, had also come. Even as the women were talking to me, the farmer tried to consume poison. On seeing it, a staff members rushed towards him and snatched the bottle away and shifted the farmer to hospital for treatment,” M. Kanagavalli, Deputy Commissioner, told The Hindu .

As per her instructions, her staff also lodged a complaint against the farmer in the Koppal Town police station.

Sources in the District Hospital said that as the condition of Rudrappa was becoming critical, he was referred to Karnataka Institute of Medical Sciences (KIMS) hospital in Hubballi for further treatment.
