‘Existing arrangement will continue in Council’

K.S. Eshwarappa, Leader of the Opposition in the Legislative Council, has expressed confidence that the arrangement of BJP nominee as Chairman of the Upper House and Janata Dal (Secular) nominee as Deputy Chairman will continue.

“I read statements saying the Janata Dal (S) is forging an alliance with the Congress to clinch the post of Chairman.

Senior Janata Dal (S) leader Y.S.V. Dutta has appealed to all political parties to support Basavaraj Horatti, who got elected for a record seventh time, for the post. But, sitting Chairman D.H. Shankarmurthy has already met Janata Dal (S) president H.D. Deve Gowda, who has promised to support him. I am sure that the existing arrangement will continue,” he said.

Mr. Eshwarappa, who was here to hold discussions with the Deputy Commissioner and chief executive officer of the zilla panchayat, was responding to questions by presspersons on Saturday.

‘Not final’

“The statements issued by these leaders are not final. Mr. Gowda as the national president and H.D. Kumaraswamy as the State unit president will have to decide,” he said.

Mr. Eshwarappa said that BJP State president B.S. Yeddyurappa’s unilateral announcement of the list of office-bearers of the State unit and district units had led to discontentment.

“This is not a big issue. However, Mr. Yeddyurappa should not have announced the list without discussing it with the core committee and other senior leaders. We will discuss it and settle the issue,” he added.
