Prohibitory orders have been clamped in Dakshina Kannada, except under Mangaluru Police Commissionerate limits, till midnight of June 21 after violence erupted in trouble-hit Kalladka town, near Bantwal, again on Tuesday evening.

No untoward incidents were reported on Wednesday in the town that witnessed a group clash in which at least four persons, including a police official, were injured in stone-pelting and in attacks. Some vehicles were damaged. Ten cases have been registered and 18 persons have been arrested in connection with the clash in Kalladka.

In a separate incident at Melkar near Kalladka on Tuesday night, three motorcyle-borne men reportedly attacked one Kumar (26). He has been admitted to a hospital in the city.

Sensing trouble and to prevent spreading of violence, Deputy Commissioner K.G. Jagadeesha on Wednesday imposed prohibitory orders under Section 144 of the Code of Criminal Procedure in Bantwal, Belthangady, Sullia and Puttur taluks. Earlier, the Additional Deputy Commissioner Kumar had imposed prohibitory orders in Bantwal and three other taluks till June 14 midnight. Processions and movement of people in a group have been barred during this period.

Amid heavy police presence, shops, business establishments and educational institutions were open in Kalladka on Wednesday. However, many hotels remained shut.

Security was beefed up with deployment of 12 platoons of Karnataka State Reserve Police, six platoons of District Armed Reserve and 400 policemen from different stations in the Western Range. The police are using CCTVs installed at Kalladka and other sensitive places for surveillance. Police are questioning persons suspected to be involved in the clash.
