Forest authorities in BRT Sanctuary were on their toes on Sunday night.

As Dasara elephant Gajendra was untraceable after the twin attacks, an alert had been sounded in the area and forest authorities had asked the people living in the vicinity to be watchful.

Principal Chief Conservator of Forests (Wildlife) Vinay Luthra told The Hindu that BRT Sanctuary authorities had been asked to capture the frenzied Gajendra as soon as possible.

Mr. Luthra said two teams had been constituted to capture the jumbo with help of trained elephants. The authorities had been asked to send Kumki elephants with the teams to bring Gajendra to order.

Veterinarian Nagaraj, one of the team members, said, “We are on the jumbo’s trail since morning and its location was yet to be identified. Two teams have gone inside the jungles. We are tracking the water bodies bordering the forests hoping that the jumbo would come there to quench its thirst,” he said.

Abhimanyu

gets the task

Dasara elephant Abhimanyu from Mathikodu elephant camp near Tithimathi forests, who is known for reining in erratic elephants, arrived at K. Gudi on Monday afternoon.

Expressing confidence that Abhimanyu would restrain Gajendra, Mr. Nagaraj, who is popularly known as ‘elephant doctor’, said Abhimanyu is sharp and intelligent. “Abhimanyu has a tracking skill and I’m sure he will not miss his target this time too.” Search operations were suspended following sundown.
