District and Sessions judge Shivashankar B. Amarannavar said on Thursday that protection of environment was one of the important duties of a citizen.
Mr. Amarannavar was speaking after presenting the ‘Parisara Mitra’ and other related awards aimed at creating environmental awareness among school students at a function organised by the Department of Public Instruction here.
Mr. Amarannavar said that all students should be made aware of the importance and benefits of protecting our environment.
They should be told about the importance of growing and protecting trees, as well as about the harmful effects of pollution to water, air and sound.
There should be proper and sustainable utilisation of natural resources. Eco-friendly industries should be promoted.
Kumara, Additional Deputy Commissioner, said that environmental awareness was essential to lead a healthy life.
The high school section of the Government Pre-University College, Hebri, bagged the ‘Parisara Mitra’ award and a cash prize of Rs. 20,000.
Ten schools bagged the Green School awards and cash prizes of Rs. 2,000 each.
Ten other schools bagged the Orange School awards and cash prizes of Rs. 1,000 each.
