An eight-year-old boy was run over by a goods vehicle near Tipu Circle in the city on Sunday.

The victim Mohammed Asif was crossing the road to reach his father’s shop when the mishap occurred. Residents blocked the stretch between Tipu Circle and Fountain Circle, complaining of frequent mishaps.

Police said the driver of the vehicle, who was assaulted by angry residents, was taken into custody and produced before court. He was denied bail and has been jailed, said an official of the Narasimharaja Traffic police. Earlier, City Police Commissioner M.A. Saleem and senior officials prevailed upon protesters to withdraw the agitation, promising they would take action to prevent accidents. The body was taken to hospital for post-mortem.
