Chief Minister B.S. Yeddyurappa said on Tuesday that the State Government was not sparing any effort to tide over the worsening power crisis.
Addressing presspersons here, he said that the Gujarat Government had agreed to sell power to Karnataka and he was in constant touch with his Gujarat counterpart Narendra Modi in this regard.
He said that a team of officers would visit Gujarat shortly to complete the formalities for purchase of power from that State.
Apart from it, the Government had decided to purchase 600 MW of power from the Udupi Power Project in the first week of May, while 250 MW from the 8th unit of the Raichur Thermal Power Station would be available next month. This would help ease the crisis to an extent in the State, Mr. Yeddyurappa said.
He said the Jindal Power Project of Bellary, which had been supplying 350 MW of power to Tamil Nadu, had agreed to supply 650 MW to Karnataka. The Government had decided to give importance to non-conventional power generation. Licences given for windmill projects would be cancelled if the firms concerned were not interested in power generation.
He said that the suggestion to increase the subsidy for utilising solar energy would be considered. Instructions had been given to public offices and institutions to avoid wastage of power.
Mr. Yeddyurappa said that the civic bodies had been asked to ensure that streetlights were switched on at 6.30 p.m. instead of 6 p.m. and switch off at 6 a.m. instead of 6.30 a.m. as it was expected to help conserve power.
