People in power at the Centre are making all efforts to ensure that women are confined to kitchens, alleged N. Prabha, State secretary of the Bharatiya Jnana Vignana Samiti (BGVS), here on Sunday at a women’s convention, organised by the Samata BGVS.

Leaders of the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) had repeatedly said that rapes occurred only in India and not in Bharat. In their opinion, rapes were not happening in rural India, which was far from truth. However, with such statements, they wanted women to remain indoors as in the past. “No religion has given equal rights to women. For ages, women have been fighting the injustice done to them. The disappointing fact is that the people in power hardly understand the importance of providing women with opportunities,” she said.

Bagur Manje Gowda, president of the State Government Employees’ Association, said the decreasing sex ratio among the children below the age of six was an alarming trend. The laws to curb female foeticide had not become effective. “Every human being should think seriously about this problem and resolve to fight against the trend,” he said.

Hassan Advocates Association chairman B. Chandrashekhar, district convener of Samata BGVS Mamata Shivu, Hassan district BGVS president H.T. Gururaj and others were present.
