The Election Commission of India (ECI) has decided to provide voter identity slips at their doorstep on the eve of polling day for the forthcoming Assembly elections, specifying the polling booth.
Normally, such slips are be issued by political parties.
Announcing this at a press conference before winding up the two-day consultation that the ECI held with political parties as well as the State government regarding issues pertaining to the Assembly polls, Chief Election Commissioner V.S. Sampath said the commission’s voter ID slips would have the photo of the voter and the name of the polling booth. While utmost care would be taken to deliver them to voters at home, they could also be collected from the commission’s kiosks near the booths.
Another advantage of the voter ID slips is that voters can also use it as an alternative to the Elector’s Photo Identify Card to exercise their franchise, he said.
Pointing out that there were complaints of candidates taking away the EPICs of voters who were unlikely to vote for them, he said the voter ID slips could be used in such cases.
