Two teams of the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) on Wednesday began investigations into the kidnap case in which police officer Kallappa Handibag, who was found dead on Tuesday, was allegedly involved.

The officers, led by Superintendent of Police, CID, D.C. Rajappa, visited Chikkamagaluru where he was posted and the case of kidnap took place, while Sonia Narang, DIG, CID, visited Muragod in Belagavi district and inspected the house where Handibag hanged himself.

Handibag had allegedly received Rs. 10 lakh in cash from a friend of Tejas Gowda, who had been kidnapped.

The officer had gone missing and was later found dead in his father-in-law’s house in Muragod.

The CID team reached Basavanahalli Police Station in Chikkamagaluru, where the case was registered. The team also visited the spot, where Tejas Gowda was allegedly kidnapped on June 28. Senior officers held a meeting here at the SP office in the evening. At Belagavi, Ms. Narang and her team inspected the house and room where Kallappa hanged himself. Among other material evidences, the team was also looking for a suicide note.

Ms. Narang told a section of media later: “At this stage, I can only say that the CID has taken up the investigation of the case. Other details will be given only after completion of investigation.”
