While a report on the foetuses found on Saturday on the banks of the Hiranyakeshi at Sankeshwar in Belgaum district of Karnataka is awaited, the police continued searches at hospitals and clinics in and around Sankeshwar on Monday.

The dumping of foetuses had given room for suspicion about illegal abortion rackets thriving in the region, and since Sunday the police have been conducting searches.

A special team, led by senior police officials, is checking records related to admissions and deliveries at these hospitals. They suspect that some of the staff at these hospitals may be involved in the act.

Superintendent of Police Sandeep Patil told The Hindu that the foetuses were handed over to doctors at the Belgaum district hospital and that he would be able to give further details only after receiving a report, which was expected by Tuesday evening.
