The State government has proposed to centralise purchase of drugs and equipment as buying in bulk will cost less. Minister of State for Medical Education Sharan Prakash R. Patil told presspersons here on Wednesday that an official committee, headed by the director, Department of Medical Education, would be constituted to study the proposal. The committee would study the centralised system for drug procurement in Kerala and Andhra Pradesh and then suggest to the government a course of action.

Free medicine

Mr. Patil said that the government has planned to distribute medicine free to patients to discourage doctors writing prescriptions to be bought from pharmacies other than government-owned. Free distribution of medicine would address leakage in drug procurement.
