Drive against illegal sand extraction continues

₹5 lakh worth sand seized in Tirthahalli taluk

Police on Thursday continued their raids on illegal sand extraction and storage points in Tirthahalli taluk.

More than 30 truck load of sand stored in an open field on the outskirts of Kittanagadde-Tenkabail village was seized during the raid.

The sand was illegally extracted from the Kushavathi rivulet nearby.

Similar raids were conducted on illegal storage points in Beesanahalli, Mulabagilu, and Araga villages. More than 10 truck load of sand stored near Government higher primary school in Agrahara village was seized.

The sand was said to be extracted in an illegal manner from the Majjigehalla and Gopinathahalla rivulets.

The total worth of the sand seized is estimated to be around ₹5 lakh.

Cases have been booked against four persons under Mines and Minerals (Development and Regulation) Act, 1975 and under Sections 379 (theft) and 420 (cheating) of the IPC.

It may be mentioned here that the police had conducted raids on illegal sand storage points in Guttiyadehalli, Malagaru, and Bejjavalli villages in Tirthahalli taluk on November 18 and near Malur village on November 19.
