Downpour leaves Mysuru, nearby districts reeling

Forecast indicates thunderstorm and more rain during the next few days; power supply disrupted, trees uprooted, and low-lying areas flooded

Heavy rain accompanied by thunder lashed Mysuru and surrounding regions on Friday, and the forecast indicates thunderstorm and rain during the next few days.

Friday morning’s rainfall was preceded by downpour on Thursday night and is a continuation of similar weather experienced in the last few days, with the region receiving moderate to heavy rains during the day or at night. According to the Karnataka State Natural Disaster Monitoring Centre, Mysuru received 32.9 mm of rainfall during the 24-hour period ending 8.30 a.m. on Friday, as against the normal of 3.7 mm for the period. This is a 78% departure from the normal for the day. From May 1 to 19, Mysuru received 107.2 mm of rainfall as against 77.7 mm.

Following the rains, parts of low-lying areas in Mysuru were inundated while trees came crashing down owing to the gale and power lines snapped in different areas of the city, including Vontikoppal, Vidyaranyapuram and a few other areas.

Power supply was disrupted owing to heavy rain and wind while puddles were formed across the city and at the Oval Grounds used by morning walkers and athletes for their practice session.

Mandya district too received rains. Chamarajanagar district recorded a rainfall of 38.6 mm as against the normal of 4.9 mm.

The rainfall in most of the hoblis across all the seven taluks of Mysuru district was also widespread and uniform for the month so far and the cumulative rainfall from January 1 to May 19 also indicates above normal precipitation, as per the KSNDMC statistics. Consequent to rains signalling the onset of the pre-monsoon showers, the temperature has dipped considerably.
