Domestic workers to strike work tomorrow

Domestic workers, under the banner of the National Platform for Domestic Workers, will participate in a rally on June 15 and go on a daylong strike on June 16 seeking a legislation to regulate their employment condition and provide them social security.

The strike will mark National Domestic Workers’ Day declared by the International Labour Organisation as part of its campaign and work to ensure decent work for domestic workers worldwide.

In a memorandum submitted to the government, the National Platform for Domestic Workers has urged the government to set up a tripartite board comprising representatives of the domestic workers, employers and the government to ensure welfare of domestic workers and enforcement of the legislation for the welfare of domestic workers. The organisation also aims to encourage formation of domestic workers union. The National Platform for Domestic Workers will organise a rally in New Delhi on July 31 as part of the campaign.
