Domestic workers staged a protest under the aegis of the Karnataka Domestic Workers’ Movement in the city on Tuesday seeking fulfilment of their various demands.

Addressing the protest meet, Shantha, a domestic worker said that the government should form a welfare trust for domestic workers. Through the proposed welfare trust, the activities that will bring positive changes to the lives of domestic workers should be taken up, she said, adding that as domestic workers are unorganised, they are subjected to exploitation.

The domestic workers are denied the benefits for which they are legally entitled for, she said.

The Domestic Workers (Registration, Social Security and Welfare) Act, 2008, that was introduced to regulate payment of wage and working conditions, is not implemented properly.

Even after the law was introduced, domestic workers are denied minimum wage and weekly holiday. She also pressed the government to take measures to strengthen the social security net for domestic workers.

As part of the protest, the domestic workers took out a procession here.
