Districts in state vie for IIT

March 12, 2015 02:01 pm | Updated 02:01 pm IST - Vijayapura

Following the announcement of Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) in Karnataka by Finance Minister Arun Jaitley in his budget, the competition among several districts has stiffened to establish the premier institute in their respective district.

While the districts of Central and South Karnataka including, Hassan and Mysuru are trying for the establishment of the centre, two districts of North Karnataka, Vijayapura and Bagalkot too have thrown a hat in the ring.

The Union Government has not zeroed in on any districts of the State to set up the IIT.

Meanwhile the elected representatives of the twin districts here say that their respective districts deserve an IIT as they are socioeconomically backward.

“Surely, on the merit bases, Vijayapura in every sense deserves to have the prestigious institute. This district which is one of the most backward districts in erstwhile BombayKarnataka region should be considered for the IIT by the Union Government”, said, M.B. Patil, District InCharge and Water Resources Minister.

Meanwhile, the IT/BT Minister and Bagalkot District InCharge, S.R. Patil too has assured to grant land in his district for the institute. He has said that the district has all potential and facilities that is needed by am IIT.
