Representatives of the Mangaluru Roman Catholic Diocese on Friday urged the police to establish peace committees from the village to State-level to maintain peace and harmony.

Demanding the immediate restoration of normalcy in Dakshina Kannada, diocese representatives, led by Council general secretary M.P. Naronha, submitted a memorandum to Director-General and Inspector-General of Police Rupak Kumar Dutta, who is on a Mangaluru visit.

The peace committees should comprise of people who have influence over the local community and should have power to enforce the resolutions, the memorandum said.

The diocese also urged the strengthening of the Intelligence wing of the department to prevent further troubles.

The department should identify troublemakers and initiate action through security proceedings by taking bond for good behaviour, the memorandum said.

It also urged the department to recruit local people to the force since they would be well-versed in ground realities.

Stringent action should be taken against persons sending provocative messages on social media, it said. The delegation comprised Rev. J.B. Crasta, diocese public relations officer Rev. William Menezes, Fr. Muller Medical College Director Rev Richard Coelho, and others.
