The former Chief Ministers N. Dharam Singh, B.S. Yeddyurappa and D.V. Sadananda Gowda and Union Ministers M. Veerappa Moily and M. Mallikarjun Kharge were among the prominent candidates who filed their nomination papers for the Lok Sabha elections on Thursday.
As many as 28 candidates filed their papers in 18 Lok Sabha constituencies in the State on the second day.
With this, 50 candidates have entered the poll fray in 23 Lok Sabha constituencies in two days.
Some candidates have filed more than two sets of nomination papers.
Mr. Dharam Singh (Congress) filed his nomination papers in Bidar constituency, while Mr. Moily (Congress) submitted his in Chickballapur constituency.
Mr. Yeddyurappa and Mr. Sadananda Gowda filed their papers in Shimoga and Bangalore North constituencies, respectively, on behalf of the BJP.
Mr. Kharge of the Congress submitted his papers to contest from the Gulbarga (Reserved) constituency.
A few of the other leaders who filed their nomination papers are Ananthkumar Hegde (Uttara Kannada), Nalin Kumar Kateel (Dakshina Kannada), Pratap Simha (Mysore), all from the BJP, and Rizwan Arshad (Bangalore Central) from the Congress.
Addressing presspersons, Chief Electoral Officer Anil Kumar Jha said that BJP’s 12 candidates, the Congress’ seven, and the Janata Dal(S)’s one have filed their nomination papers.
Meanwhile, the police have seized Rs. 75 lakh in cash, 2,000 ‘T’ shirts, 63 saris and liquor (10,700 litres) worth Rs. 60 lakh. Also, Mr. Jha held a meeting with Income Tax department officials and discussed the precautionary steps to be taken for effective enforcement of the model code of conduct.
