Devadasis seek reservation for their children

Despite implementation of several schemes aimed for the uplift of the Devadasi community, the plight of their children remains grim as they face ostracism in schools. Several Devadasis gathered in the city on Tuesday demanding reservation for their children.

A Devadasi from Belagavi said it was difficult for them to fill columns in school and college forms seeking details of their children’s father. There is a need for colleges and schools to do away with this or make it optional, she said.

The problems they face were addressed at a two-day workshop here. B.L. Patil, chairperson of Vimochana Sangha, said although most of the Devadasis belong to the Scheduled Caste or Scheduled Tribe communities, they want separate reservation for their children in higher education. “These people come from poor socio-economic backgrounds and a little push will help their children get an opportunity to pursue higher education.”
