Preparations are in swing for the forthcoming Assembly elections in the district.

Deputy Commissioner Lokesh M. reviewed the preparations at his office in the city on Thursday. He directed tahsildars and revenue officials to take measures to provide basic amenities, including toilets, pure drinking water and electricity connection, at all the 1,704 polling stations in the district. Ramps should be constructed at all the stations for the differently-abled and senior citizens, he said, instructing officials to conduct spot inspections and submit a report in this regard to him.

Regarding the revision of electoral rolls, he directed officials to conduct polling booth-level public meetings to disseminate information among voters and booth-level agents of political parties. The names of voters who have migrated to other places and of the deceased should be collected and deleted from the electoral rolls, he said. According to an estimate, 65,000 new names should be added to the voters’ list in the district; so far, 7,000 have enrolled.

He directed officials to visit colleges and extend assistance to persons above the age of 18 to enrol as voters. To spread awareness among people on enrolling, sports meets and cultural programmes should be held at the booth level, he said.

Mr. Lokesh said web cameras would be installed at all the polling stations in the district and election officers would be able to monitor the process with live webcast of the polling.
