Depressed over failing the recent Secondary School Leaving Certificate (SSLC) examination, two teenaged girls allegedly attempted suicide by hanging in the district on Monday evening.

Of them, Jahnavi (16) of Alekere in the taluk died at her residence. Pavana (16) of Chinnana Doddi near Maddur is battling for life at a hospital, the police said.

The academic performance of the two girls was poor, sources at the Education Department said.

Jahnavi was a student of MEM High School at Keelara. She might have committed suicide after 3 p.m., sources at the Mandya Rural Police Station said.

However, the incident came to light in the evening when her family members noticed the body. The body was shifted to the government hospital for post-mortem.

Meanwhile, the condition of Pavana, a student of a school in Chinnana Doddi is critical, Maddur police said.

Her family members noticed her hanging from the ceiling and immediately rushed her to a local hospital in Maddur from where she was referred to the Mandya Institute of Medical Sciences Hospital.

She was later shifted to Prashant Nursing Home, a private hospital, owing to lack of ventilator at Mandya Institute of Medical Sciences Hospital, her family sources said. They raised slogans against the Mandya Institute of Medical Sciences Hospital for not providing treatment to the girl.
