Residents of Peehalli, near Srirangapatna, staged a protest by holding the body of a farmer near the village on Sunday, urging the authorities concerned to allot a land for burial ground .

On Saturday night, Manchashetty, farmer, died of some illness. However, his relatives could not get space for cremation. Later, they staged a protest dharna.

According to the protesters, they have been asking the district administration for several years to grant land for burial ground. The landless people had to cremate the bodies of their loved ones at government lands, next to roads or canals. However, the departments concerned had not initiated any measure to allot land for burial ground, they said.

The police and other departments visited the spot and pacified the public by assuring them that their demand would soon be met. Later, Manchashetty’s body was cremated in a private land.
