Even as the proposal to divide the Bangalore University – bifurcation or trifurcation- is still pending, the people in Kolar and Chickballapur districts have once again raised their voice for getting a separate varsity for undivided Kolar.

A meeting of people’s representatives, officials and principals of Government First Grade Colleges in the district gave vent to the long cherished aspiration of the region. The meeting held at the Deputy Commissioner’s office on Monday was presided over by the district in-charge Minister U.T. Khader.

Following the feelings of people of the region along with the neighbouring Hoskote in Bengaluru Rural district, a meeting exclusively to discuss the issue has been fixed for February 2 at Bengaluru. People’s representatives from both the districts as well as Hoskote are slated to participate in the meeting.

Most of the speakers expressed their displeasure to divide the present varsity like Bangalore Central, Bangalore North and Bangalore South University. “Kolar should not be treated as the tail of Bengaluru while taking up the process of division of the University”, they felt.

“Demand should be focused on creating separate university sans nomenclature of Bengaluru”, former Speaker of Legislative Assembly and Srinivaspur MLA K.R. Rameshkumar said.

The participants demanded that the new university should start functioning from 2015-2016 academic year itself from the Kolar Post Graduate Centre of Bangalore University. The campus of new varsity should be named “Antaragangothri” on the lines of Mangalagangothri, Manasagangothri, Hemagangothri and likewise keeping in mind geographical and heritage of the region, it was suggested.

Mr. Kumar suggested the Deputy Commissioners of twin districts to identify a minimum of 150 acre of land for the new university by February 2 when the meeting would be held.

‘Educational injustice’

PG Centres of Bangalore University were started simultaneously at Kolar and Tumakuru in 1994-1995. Though Tumakuru centre was later converted into a University, Kolar centre continued to remain a PG Centre. “This negligence is an educational injustice to the region.

The government should undo this injustice at least now by starting new university”, V. Chandrashekhar Nangali, principal, GFGC, Malur said.

MLCs Y.A. Narayanaswamy, D.S. Veeraiah, Deputy Commissioner K.V. Thrilokchandra, ADC R.S. Peddappaiah participated among others.
