Delay in VCI recognition puts graduates in a fix

Right now, they are ineligible for government jobs

May 26, 2013 01:34 am | Updated November 17, 2021 05:02 am IST - Bangalore:

Seventy-two graduates from the government veterinary colleges in Shimoga and Hassan will not be eligible for government job as these colleges are yet to get recognition from the Veterinary Council of India (VCI) because of lack of infrastructure.

Recruitment process

The document verification process for the recruitment of veterinary officers by the Department of Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Services, Karnataka, will be held between May 27 and 29. Though students of veterinary colleges in Bidar and Bangalore have been intimated of the process, those in Shimoga and Hassan have not got any information.

Scrutiny put off

The scrutiny was supposed to be held in January, but was postponed following requests from the Karnataka Veterinary, Animal and Fisheries Sciences University (KVAFSU).

Apex court verdict

The varsity was hoping that the VCI recognition would come soon but a case in the Supreme Court seems to be delaying the process. “We are awaiting a Supreme Court judgment on 10 private veterinary colleges in Rajasthan. I have spoken to the president of the VCI and hope that a positive action would be taken after the Supreme Court judgment comes through,” said Renuka Prasad, Vice-Chancellor, KVAFSU. The hearing of the case is scheduled for June .

“There is a shortage of veterinary officers in the State and this was one of the reasons why the recruitment process could not be stalled further. Those who have completed the course will definitely get jobs once the VCI recognition is in place,” he said.

These students belong to the first and second batches. The Government Veterinary College, Shimoga, was started in 2006 and the one in Hassan in 2007.

Meanwhile, the Veterinary Council of India has instructed Veterinary College, Hassan, not to admit students for academic year 2013-14.
