Deficit budget for University of Mysore

Rs. 186.38 cr. revenue projected against expenditure of Rs. 218.04 cr.

The University of Mysore has projected a deficit of Rs. 31.65 crore in its Budget for 2015-16 that was presented at the Academic Council meeting here on Friday.

The budget estimate projects a revenue of Rs. 186.38 crore against a projected expenditure of Rs. 218.04 crore. The budget was tabled by Academic Council member S. Indumathi who is also dean, Arts Faculty, University of Mysore.

The bulk of the expenditure comes under the pay-and-allowance head accounting for Rs. 117.80 crore being salary for the university staff and Rs. 60 crore pension of retired employees. The pay and allowances of the university staff alone accounts for 54 per cent of the budget, while pension contributes another 28 per cent of the projected outlay.

Funds for research

But the expenditure for ‘teaching, research and extension activities’ is projected at a mere Rs. 5.99 crore, which amounts to 3 per cent of the total budget outlay. The projected expenditure for examination activities is Rs. 13.39 crore.

A greater portion of the projected revenue is by way of block grant from the government which is estimated to be Rs. 152.37 crore, while revenue from admission, registration and affiliation fee is pegged at Rs. 24 crore and examination fee at Rs. 28 crore. The university had sought a block grant of Rs. 204 crore from the State.

The university proposes to establish a Directorate of Outreach and Online Programme during 2015-16 at an estimated cost of Rs. 5 lakh, while Rs. 5 crore has been set aside for seminars and special lectures to be held during the year to mark the university’s centenary celebrations.

However, the State government has allocated an additional Rs. 50 crore for the university centenary celebrations, apart from sanctioning Rs. 5 crore for establishing the Nalwudi Krishnaraja Wadiyar study chair. In addition, it has also received Rs. 1 crore each to establish U.R. Ananthamurthy and Prof. Thippeswamy study chairs.
