The State Cabinet on Thursday approved filing an affidavit in the Supreme Court and the Central Empowered Committee (CWC) to leave out 4,98,991 hectares out of 17,52,919 hectares identified by district-level committees as deemed forests.
Minister for Law and Parliamentary Affairs T.B. Jayachandra, who briefed presspersons on the Cabinet decisions, said the Cabinet had earlier ordered a review of the deemed forest area. Revenue lands with features of forests and having 50 trees per hectare are identified as deemed forests.

The Cabinet also cleared a proposal on identifying wetlands in the State and send it to the Centre for notification under the Wetlands (Conservation and Management) Rules 2010.
‘Dial 100’ in all districts
Dial 100, the police helpline service, will henceforth be available in all districts of Karnataka.
This will be done at a cost of ₹13.73 crore.
Approval has also been given for installing CCTV camera systems in 774 police stations in the State at estimated non-recurring cost of ₹11.61 crore and recurring cost of ₹2.91 crore.
Padma awards
The government which faced serious criticism for not selecting persons for the prestigious Padma awards last year in time, has decided to form a committee to identify names this year.
“The committee will have the Additional Chief Secretary, the Secretary of Kannada and Culture, the Secretary of Information and Public Relations, and the Secretary of Higher Education,” Mr. Jayachandra said.
