Debt-ridden farmer commits suicide in Kalaburagi

A debt-ridden farmer committed suicide by consuming pesticide in Magangeri village in Jewargi taluk in Kalaburagi on Monday.

The farmer Sharanagowda Birdar (40) consumed the pesticide on Monday morning and was rushed to the BLDS Teaching and General Hospital in Vijayapura where he breathed his last on Monday evening. The official sources said on Tuesday that the farmer had taken Rs two lakh crop from Pragati Krishna Grameen Bank and had also availed loans from private money-lenders in the village.

The farmer had suffered extensive loss due to the failure of crop in the Khariff and Rabi season and was not in a position to repay his loans.

A case has been registered in the Yedrami Police Station in Jewargi taluk.
