Dasara elephant Gajendra, which had gored Srirama, a celebrated Dasara elephant, and Ganapathi, a kavadi to death on Sunday evening, was captured in the BRT Sanctuary on Tuesday.

The frenzied jumbo, which is in musth, had strayed into the forests after the twin attacks. The Forest Department had set up two teams to capture and reign in the pachyderm to prevent any untoward incidents.

Accordingly, an operation was launched on Monday morning to corner the jumbo, whose location could not be traced till Monday evening and the operation was eventually suspended due to darkness.

Dr. Nagaraj, forest veterinarian, who was part of the operation, told The Hindu that Gajendra was tracked in one of the forest stretches in the sanctuary and was immediately sedated.

“It was tranquillized with a small proportion of xylazine so that the jumbo remains in standing position and could walk. It was chained after a few minutes and he is being brought to K. Gudi camp to which it belongs,” he said.
