Dasara elephant Srirama (59), which had suffered injuries in a grievous attack by another Dasara jumbo Gajendra (60) near K Gudi camp in BRT range on Sunday, died on Sunday night.

Conservator of Forests, BRT range, Lingaraju told The Hindu that Srirama’s rib cage was badly damaged after Gajendra, who was in heat (musth), gored him during a tussle between them.

"Gajendra pushed Srirama to a distance with its tusks inside the latter’s body inside the forest. The grievously injured Srirama breathed his last,” he said.

Gajendra had earlier gored Ganapathi, a Kavadi for Srirama, to death after running amok in the camp on Sunday evening. Ganapathi had tried to prevent Gajendra from attacking Srirama.

Ganapathi died on the way to the hospital. His body was sent to Nagapura, his native village, in H D Kote taluk of Mysuru district for the last rites, according to Mr Lingaraju.

Gajendra, who was still in a state of frenzy, did not return to the camp on Monday after straying inside the forest following the twin attacks.

Durgaparameshwari, another jumbo in the Dasara team, is also housed in K. Gudi camp.
